So, strap yourselves in and get ready to drive the Great Ocean Road!
Day one begins with a pick up in Melbourne from your hotel or at Federation Square bright and early, so we can beat the traffic and escape the city.
We’ll drive directly to the city of Geelong for a leisurely stroll along its revamped waterfront to stretch our legs. Then it’s back in the bus for a quick drive over to the iconic Bells Beach where we’ll enjoy a delicious morning tea and admire the view. There’s also a chance to see Eastern Grey Kangaroos in the wild amid the local area.
After morning tea we'll reach the twisting, cliff-hugging section of the Great Ocean Road where amazing views come thick and fast. We’ll stop and have a look at the amazing ‘Arch’ cliff feature, then drive into the seaside town of Lorne for lunch. It’s a relaxed tour, so there’s time for some shopping or even a dip in the ocean!
Following lunch we’ll meander along the spectacular Great Ocean Road and stop at scenic spots including Kennett River, where you can see koalas lazily chewing gum leaves in the trees!
We’ll then reach the idyllic seaside town of Apollo Bay and head inland to the Great Otway National Park for a 1km long guided tour, exploring a pristine temperate rainforest gully. After our exertions we’ll drive back to Apollo Bay and check you into your private, self-contained villa at Beacon Point Ocean View Villas. We have dinner tonight at the famous Chris's at Beacon Point. This restaurant is the only local restaurant to be awarded a 'Chefs Hat' and boasts an extensive menu that utilizes great local produce in a modern Greek-Australian way.
After a great night’s sleep, the second day begins with a delicious breakfast a the Bay Leaf Café, a local favourite, with coffee, tea and a full breakfast menu to start your day right.
Back in the vehicle, we’ll cruise through the scenic Otway ranges and at Castle Cove overlooking the Aire river valley, where a local guide will bring great insight into the region’s Aboriginal heritage.
Later that morning we will drive to the iconic 12 Apostles, stunning pillars of rock set amid the pounding Southern Ocean. We’ll arrive as the morning sun hits them, making for perfect pictures and memories. There’s plenty of time to explore – you can take a helicopter flight at your own expense or simply walk the boardwalks.
After the 12 Apostles, we’ll visit the site of a tragic 19th century Australian shipwreck, the Loch Ard Gorge, telling you the tale and showing original artefacts to illustrate.
Time for lunch and the tiny fishing community of Port Campbell will be our host with its array of restaurants and cafes. Afterwards, we’ll drive through a part of the Great Ocean Road that’s not as well known but is full of stunning scenery, including the delightful Bay of Islands and a geological feature known as London Bridge.
For the remainder of the afternoon, we’ll drive to the town of Warrnambool to visit the Tower Hill Game Reserve to observe and even feed emus! We’ll then head to Port Fairey and cross the border into South Australia, arriving at the city of Mount Gambier to tour a volcanic crater lake before settling into our night’s accommodation.
The third and final day begins in the Naracoorte Caves National Park, where a local guide will take us on a tour of World Heritage listed limestone caves where you’ll see the fossils of the ‘Mega Fauna.’
We’ll then drive through the Padthaway wine region and stop for lunch in Keith. Then it’s onto Adelaide across vast country badly affected by drought – a stark contrast to the lush coastline we’ve been enjoying. We’ll stop in the tourist village of Hahndorf and then take in the views of Adelaide from Mount Lofty. Then it’s the final run into the city, arriving around 6pm.
