After leaving Federation Square at 8:10 am (Melbourne accommodation pick-up available prior to departure), you will travel through the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne towards the picturesque Dandenong Ranges. Just thirty-five kilometres east of Melbourne, the Dandenong Ranges offer a serene tranquillity that is seemingly a world away from the bustling city centre. The Dandenong’s are covered in thick temperate rainforests of Mountain Ash, which happen to be the tallest flowering plant in the world. The region offers wonderful scenery featuring waterfalls, rolling hills and steep valleys, and of course, is home to the famous Puffing Billy Railway.
You will stop for morning tea at Grants on Sherbrooke and be able to enjoy the serenity and clean crisp mountain air while hopping in to a traditional Devonshire tea of scones, jam and cream. Grants on Sherbrooke is renowned for its birdlife. You are sure to see unique Australian birds such as the colourful Crimson Rosella, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo and Pink-chested Galah.
From Grants, it’s a short trip to Belgrave and the legendary Puffing Billy. Restored to its former glory, this century-old steam train runs daily (except Christmas Day) from Belgrave to Menzies Creek. The delightful 30-minute ride runs through the heart of the rainforest and will take you back to the time of the steam locomotive. You will enjoy the picturesque beauty of magnificent Australian countryside while travelling at a leisurely pace in carriages. While rattling rollicking carriages combine with the sounds and smell of genuine coal-fired steam travel, to enable you to truly experience what the golden age of steam was like. Highlights of the rail trip include the gorgeous Sherbrooke Forest and a ride over the old Trestle Bridge. Just before Menzies Creek, you can see stunning views of Port Phillip Bay.
Upon arrival at Menzies Creek, you will then make the short journey to the charming little village of Sassafras. You will travel through thick rainforest that is home to all sorts of native wildlife. There is every possibility of spotting wallabies or the beautiful lyrebird while travelling through this area.
Sassafras offers a selection of delightful antique and craft shops for you to explore for that special memento to remind you of a great day out.
